| Protect Yourself - Document and Mark Your Gear

As the economy goes south, more and more people will be tempted to break into homes, cars, and businesses, looking for items that can be pawned or sold. You should protect yourself, your family, and perhaps the band(s) you play with, by documenting and marking your gear (instruments, electronics, etc.). Taking photographs and/or video will help you file an insurance claim or a police report, distribute a 'be on the watch for' alert, etc. Having your stuff marked with a personal identifier (1) makes it harder to pawn or sell, (2) makes it easier to be flagged as stolen and (3) helps get recovered items back to their rightful owner.
I appreciate not wanting to mark up a beautiful instrument that is as much a work of art as a tool for making music. But honestly, how likely are you to ever see that beautiful instrument, expensive amp, mixer board, etc., again if there is no way to prove it is yours, and no reason for that pawn shop or used-equipment buyer to suspect it does not belong to the person trying to sell it? Imagine how bad you'll feel if you see it in a shop for sale, and you can't prove it's yours.
And on the same note, don't leave your gear exposed in your vehicle. If nothing else, carry a blanket or such to cover it up. Protect yourself!
