Event Title: Winston Scott Cosmic Jazz Ensemble
Event Story: Astronaut, educator, author and musician - Captain Winston Scott has logged over 24 days in space and completed three spacewalks. He is also known as a trumpet player and jazz artist who performs with various Brevard County bands. Among them is the Winston Scott Cosmic Jazz Ensemble. Ron Teixeira will perform on piano, Al Dodds on base, Stan Soloko on drums along with guest artist and vocalist Shyrl “Lady Tandy” Johnson. You can also expect some special surprise guests. Winston Scott is a retired U.S. Navy Captain, naval aviator and NASA astronaut, he currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the President for External Relations and Economic Development at Florida Institute of Technology (commonly known as Florida Tech), where he plays with the university’s Jazz Syndicate and directs its faculty band, TWITCHY. He also composes and arranges music for these and other groups. Additionally, he is a professor of music and professor of aeronautics. Scott has earned a BA degree in music, an MS degree in aeronautical engineering and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Florida Atlantic and Michigan State Universities. He has a teaching certificate for music education from the State of Florida and has been inducted into the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity (Professional Honorary Fraternity for men in music). Additional musical credits include performing with recording greats such as soul singer Betty Wright (Grammy, 1972); receiving the coveted Edwin Franko Goldman Award, (a national award presented annually by the American Bandmaster’s Association); and recording with Shryl “Lady Tandy” Johnson and singer Billy Lee. His many performances include guest conductor for the Stetson University Wind Ensemble; guest soloist for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and guest soloist for the Melbourne Municipal Band. He performs regularly at Florida Tech, at local venues and for cultural organizations such as the Foosaner Art Museum and the Space Coast Ballet Company. Space Coast Jazz Society concerts are open to the public. General admission can be paid at the door or purchased online. $10 for members of the Jazz Society and the Rockledge Country Club. $15 for non-members and guests. Free for students (under the age of 25 years). Food and beverages are also available for purchase. The Rockledge Country Club is located at 1591 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, FL 32955.
